You could develop neck issues if you suffer from a rear-end collision, constantly look down at your phone, or participate in hobbies requiring you to look down for long periods. For instance, getting hit from behind while driving can stress the soft tissue and cause a neck sprain, more commonly called whiplash. This injury may also happen if you play an aggressive sport.

For people who stare down at a phone for prolonged periods, it can stress the soft tissue in the neck. This particular injury is a repetitive stress injury known as strain.

Back Strains, Sprains, and Other Pain

Herniated and Bulging Discs

Some of our patients may experience a bulging or herniated disc. A herniated disc may occur when you move your back in a usual way that stresses an already vulnerable disc. A tear in the disc causes the contents to seep out, placing pressure on the nearby soft tissue and nerves.

A bulging disc doesn't come from an injury. Instead, you develop this when your discs change with age. The gel-like contents will push on the weakened shell of the disc, causing it to protrude. This protrusion is less likely to cause any symptoms than a herniated disc.
